It’s not everyday that a company successfully upsets the status quo or challenges an industry’s power players, however, one organization “is pursuing the road less traveled and setting a new standard in the tech world”, according to Google CEO Larry Page.

Silicon Valley has long been the pinnacle of technical development and innovation. Companies operating in the Northern California stronghold are privvy to resources often unattainable for those in other parts of the world. Saavy investors, seasoned advisors, and a seemingly unlimited pool of world-class developers are just a few of these geographic advantages.

Increasingly though, companies across the United States and around the world are emerging as key startup players. On Monday, RJMetrics, a Philadelphia-based business intelligence platform, announced a $16.5 million round of Series B investment courtesy of August Partners, a perennial player on the heavy-hitting VC circuit. The news immediately went as viral as EV-D68 and people are wondering just where this feisty upstart came from.

To get a better idea about what this means for the “Big Data” landscape, I sat down with Google Cofounders, Larry Page and Sergei Brin.

Thanks again for taking the time gentlemen, I’d love to get your thoughts on RJ. It seems like they came out of nowhere and now I can’t open a Chrome tab without seeing that orange dodecahedron.

Sergei: Well Russell, I’d agree that RJ is everywhere right now, but it’s by no means the first time Larry and I are hearing about them. We first caught wind of RJ in early 2013 after their Series A. Gradually, we began hearing more and more about a full-stack business intelligence platform that provided enterprise level service at a startup price. The whispers quickly became hard to ignore when they turned to shouts so we reached out to learn more, straight from the source.

Larry: That’s right. After a month or two of hearing about RJ from all our top people, we decided to give Robert and Jacob a call (RJMetrics’ cofounders). We were amazed to learn about the level of forward thinking these two visionaries possess, and the product they developed to back it up. It’s not often that a superior technical platform is complemented by an unparalleled human element.

Sergei: I couldn’t agree more. Their method of partnering a full-stack BI solution, and by that I mean actual replication, transformation, warehousing, and visualization, with top-tier customer service, is not something we’d come across out west. On top of that, they were reengineering the definition of “operating lean”. The team they’ve hired is something we are continually impressed with.

Could you tell me a little more about what surprised you? What were Bob and Jake doing that’s so different from a Gooddata or Tableau?

Larry: Great question. There were a couple things that immediately caught our attention. First, they’re financially sound. They make their money work for them and understand the inherent advantages of operating in a market like Philadelphia. Second, they have a clear understanding of the current BI market and it’s shortfalls. They understand the plight of everyday Ecommerce and SaaS businesses and have created a product that fills those needs.

Sergei: That’s exactly right. Sure Gooddata provides the “full-stack experience”, but what if you don’t have an Enterprise level budget? Same story with Tableau, all the visualization in the world can’t help an Ecommerce site that doesn’t have a way to actually warehouse that data.

Larry: Absolutely Serg (sic), and to add to that, the RJPlex is something that I believe sets them apart. We focused on that in the early days of Google, and having ample avocados available is a sure way to keep your employees happy and working hard.

What do you think has been the turning point for RJMetrics?

Sergei: I’d say it’s hard to find just one turning point for RJMetrics. Everytime we follow up with Bob or Jake there’s something new to report. The company recently released the new iteration of it’s platform which includes a new “transformation cluster” being fed by top of the line warehousing infrastructure. On top of that, they’re new UI is redefining how clients view data analysis.

Larry: And that’s only on the dev side. I think RJ took a big step forward by hiring the amazing team-up of Tucker McDonald and Shaun McAvinney as AMs and Analyst/Sales, uh respectively. You should check them out on their About page. Those guys are heavy heavy hitters.

Well I guess my next question would be, why did you pass on this round of investment? From what you’re saying, RJMetrics, is going to revolutionize how we think about BI and startup businesses and buddy time, both inside and outside of Silicon Valley.

Larry: (smirks) Who says we passed?
